Right-wing extremists plotting to violently overthrow the German state are “sawing away at the pillars of our democracy,” a Green Party lawmaker has told the Bundestag parliament.

Misbah Khan was speaking at a parliamentary meeting during which Interior Minister Nancy Faeser announced plans to tighten gun laws and make it easier to remove civil servants with anti-state views.

The meeting comes just days after nationwide raids were conducted against a terrorist group that adheres to the ideology of the anti-state Reich Citizens movement.

“Right-wing extremism, hatred and incitement to hatred are sawing away at the pillars of our democracy,” said Khan.
