The Let My Vote Count Alliance, a pressure group interested in electoral matters of the country has requested the Electoral Commission to answer 7 questions in a quest to seek clarity over the decision to compile new voters register.
The EC Wednesday 27th March 2019 released press statement that suggested that all parties had been consulted over the decision of the Commission to issue a new Voter register ahead of the 2020 elections.
The statement has been challenged by the opposition NDC and some other political parties with the governing NPP displaying a seeming indifferent posture.
However, the Let My Vote Count Alliance supports the idea on the basis that it will provide a fairer register and make the voting process more transparent.
This they believe is because of the updating of the EC’s own materials and software to modern equipment.
“The Let My Vote Count Alliance (LMVCA), is of the firm position that, with the new technological advancement in areas such as cloud computing and secured encrypted systems available, a new voters register should bring more transparency and fairness to future elections” they assert in a press statement signed by the Director of Operations, John Hall Acquah.
They have thus posed some 7 questions to the EC which were contained in a press release issued on Monday April 1 2019.
Find attached the press statement.
LMVCA BACKS CALL FOR NEW VOTERS REGISTER
The Let My Vote Count Alliance (LMVCA) welcomes the news of the compilation of a new Voters Register for the 2020 General Elections announced by the electoral commission. In a press release from the Electoral Commission (EC) on the 27th of March 2019, the Electoral Commission states among other issues discussed at the Inter-Party Advisory Committee (IPAC) meeting, “The Commission revealed its commitment to compile a new Voters Register ahead of the 2020 Presidential and Parliamentary Elections.” The Let My Vote Count Alliance (LMVCA) congratulates The Electoral Commission and all stakeholders, in reaching this crucial point in the compilation of a new electoral register.
The LMVCA, in backing the decision by the Electoral Commission (EC) to compile a new Voter Register, seeks the Commission, as a matter of urgency, to answer the following prevalent questions;
1. Will the new Voter Register come with the requisite equipment for registration, verification and if necessary, transmission of results electronically?
2. Will the Registration process include the usage of enhanced technological features, including eyeball identification and facial recognition?
3. Will the new registration process and Voter Register address the issue of “over-bloating” in the existing Voter Register?
4. Will the new Voter Register curb the high incidence of the use of manual verification, which was recorded, during the referenda as observed by the Let My Vote Count Alliance (LMVCA) Observer Team, deployed at various voting centres?
5. Will the new registration process and Voter Register to address the issue of the registration of Minors and underage voters in the existing Voter Register?
6. Will the new registration process and Voter Register address the issue of deceased voters in the existing Voter Register?
7. Will the new registration process and Voter Register address the issue of foreigners registered in the existing register?
The Let My Vote Count Alliance (LMVCA), is of the firm position that, with the new technological advancement in areas such as cloud computing and secured encrypted systems available, a new voters register should bring more transparency and fairness to future elections. If the Electoral Commission and the principal stakeholders, will affirmatively answer the above questions, including other anticipated electoral anomalies associated with the above problems with the existing Register, the Let My Vote Count Alliance (LMVCA) and all democracy loving Ghanaians, in the interest of consolidating our democratic gains, are ready to throw their weight behind the Electoral Commission(EC) and all active stakeholders to make this proposed compilation of a new voters register a reality.
Let My Vote Count, Don’t Destroy our Democracy!!
Signed
John Hall Acquaah
Director of Operations
