The Eminent Advisory Committee set up by the Electoral Commission has recommended to the EC to take steps to arrange of a meeting with IPAC over the growing tension in the country with respect to EC’s decision to compile a new voters register.
The Committee chaired by Justice Emil Short in a statement after meeting with Members of the Electoral Commission a while ago has since urged the public to remain calm as steps are being taken to address the issue.
The Electoral Commission has announced later part of last year it has taken a decision to compile a new biometric register at the cost of over GHc443million.
The decision was met with outright opposition from some political parties saying there is no justification for the compilation.
However, the ruling New Patriotic Party and some other 12 parties last week held a press conference to back the EC’s decision at the time that Coalition of CSOs for Good Governance also help a public forum on the issue maintaining that it make “no sense” for the EC to spend close to 1million Ghana CEDI’s on a new register when they the self have said the current register is “very credible”
The EC in series of statements insists it will go ahead and compile the new register saying the current register that was used for about four major elections since its compilation in 2015 is “credible but weak and over stretched”
The decision of the Commission to go ahead with the exercise despite the seemingly disapproval from the public has led to a planned series of demonstrations and picketing across the country.
Last weekend, thousands of people poured on the streets of the Northern Regional capital Tamale to register their displeasure and it was followed by picketing in the EC offices in the Ahafo region.
