Dr John Kwakye, the Director of Research at the Institute of Economic Affairs (IEA) Ghana has clarified which government is responsible for the stable power supply in the last seven years. President Akufo-Addo stated during his last State of the Nation Address on February 27 that he ensured a stable power supply in the last seven years.
Government and NPP communicators likewise have attributed the stable supply during Mr. Akufo-Addo’s presidency to the NPP’s prowess in managing the energy sector. However, Dr. John Kwakye says there is more to the stability in the past seven years.
“The President mentioned his government’s success in ending the ‘Dumsor’ menace and managing ‘to keep the lights on in the last seven years. We are not going to get into the unproductive debate as to who ended Dumsor.”
“The fact that power has been much more stable in the last seven years than the previous four years, however, is evidently clear.”
He noted that “It is also a fact that the subsequent stability benefited from previous investments in the power sector. What we also know is that the stable power has been achieved at considerable budgetary cost some of which emanated from previous contractual agreements,” Dr. Kwakye explained.
