The Ghana Journalists Association (GJA) has reaffirmed its strong position against illegal mining, urging the government to take decisive action to address the ongoing crisis.

During a press conference on March 13, 2025, at the Ghana International Press Centre, the GJA President, Albert Kwabena Dwumfour emphasized the critical need for strict enforcement of mining laws and called on journalists to actively contribute to preserving Ghana’s heritage.

The President expressed deep concern over the environmental devastation caused by illegal mining, particularly the degradation of forest reserves, water bodies, and farmlands.

He also highlighted the collapse of law and order in mining communities, where human rights abuses and forced land acquisitions are becoming widespread, while government and traditional authorities struggle to address the situation effectively.

While commending the Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources for its ongoing efforts to combat illegal mining, the GJA President urged the Ministry to remain vigilant and continue its enforcement of mining regulations.

The GJA President also expressed support for President John Dramani Mahama’s commitment to combating illegal mining and assured the government of the full backing of the GJA and the Media Coalition in this critical fight. “Mr. President, the time to act is NOW,” he stated.

Additionally, the President underscored the importance of March as Ghana’s National Heritage Month, urging media professionals to use their platforms to promote and safeguard the country’s cultural identity.
