The National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA) has come out with an initiative to expand its free dialysis program nationwide, aiming to increase access to life-saving treatment for renal patients across the country.

According to Dr. Victor Bampoe, CEO of NHIA, the initiative seeks to incorporate more patients suffering from kidney conditions under the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS), building on the foundation laid by the previous government.

Currently, 20 centers are offering free dialysis services. The NHIA plans to broaden the program’s scope and ensure sustainable funding, alleviating the financial burden on patients and their families who struggle with the high costs of dialysis treatment.

To achieve this, the NHIA will procure additional dialysis machines and essential consumables for healthcare facilities nationwide.

Dr. Bampoe emphasized that the program’s expansion will enable more patients to access dialysis services without financial strain.

He said by integrating dialysis services into the NHIS, the NHIA aims to make the treatment more sustainable and reduce dependence on specific funding sources.

This development is part of the government’s broader strategy to improve access to critical healthcare services, ultimately enhancing the well-being of Ghanaians affected by kidney disease.
