The National Democratic Congress (NDC) has formally requested the Electoral Commission (EC) to allow a live broadcast of their upcoming meeting on the voters’ register. The meeting, scheduled for September 7, 2024, at the EC’s headquarters in Accra, is expected to address concerns and discrepancies in the register.
The NDC believes that a live broadcast is essential to ensure transparency and accountability in the electoral process.
In a press statement signed by the General Secretary of the party, Fiifi Fiavi Kwetey, the NDC explained that “We want to ensure that the Ghanaians are able to witness the discussions and the decisions that are taken on the voters register. We believe that this will help to build trust and confidence in the electoral process.”
The opposition has been vocal about its concerns regarding the voters’ register, alleging irregularities and discrepancies. The party claims that the current register is bloated and compromised, which could affect the outcome of the December 7 general elections.
By requesting a live broadcast, the party aims to demonstrate its commitment to transparency and ensure that the electoral process remains free from manipulation, arguing that “We want to make sure that everything is done in the open, and the Ghanaian people are able to see for themselves.”
The EC has yet to respond to the NDC’s request, but it is expected to make a decision on the matter soon. If approved, the live broadcast will give Ghanaians the opportunity to witness the discussions and decisions regarding the voters’ register, thereby promoting transparency and accountability in the electoral process.
