Ghanaian actress Martha Ankomah has shared her experience with colourism in the local movie industry, revealing how dark-skinned actors often faced discrimination and pressure to bleach their skin for better roles.

Speaking at the PCH Hangouts 2025 Edition, Ankomah recounted a time when a producer criticized her dark skin, saying it would not “shine” under the lights used in acting.

She explained that this industry bias led many actors to bleach their skin to meet beauty standards. “Because of that pressure, most of my colleagues started bleaching,” Ankomah said, noting that many had transformed their appearances to fit these standards.

Despite the pressure, she resisted, attributing her strength to her faith, wisdom, and her upbringing. “It takes the grace of God,” she said, reflecting on the challenges she faced in the industry, particularly before the rise of social media platforms like Instagram and TikTok.

Ankomah also addressed the rumours surrounding actors in the industry, acknowledging that compromises are common in any profession but stressing the importance of standing firm in one’s values.
