MTN Group has confirmed a cybersecurity breach that exposed customer data in some of the countries where it operates. The company has not yet named the affected countries but insists its core systems and financial platforms remain secure.

In a statement on April 24, 2025, MTN revealed that an unknown third party accessed parts of its systems. However, the company said there is no evidence that customer accounts or mobile money (MoMo) wallets were compromised. “Our critical systems, including the core network, billing, and financial services, remain secure and fully operational,” MTN stated.

MTN activated its cybersecurity protocols immediately and reported the incident to the South African Police Service and the Hawks. Authorities in affected countries have also been notified, and investigations are underway.

In line with regulatory requirements, MTN has started informing impacted customers. The company also urged customers to stay alert and follow good security practices. It advised users to update their apps and devices, use strong and unique passwords, and activate multifactor authentication.

MTN warned customers against sharing sensitive information like passwords, PINs, or OTPs over calls, texts, or emails. “We remain committed to protecting customer data and safeguarding the integrity of our systems,” MTN assured. “We will manage this matter carefully and continue to update stakeholders as necessary.”
