Pro-democracy group, Respect My Vote Movement, has called on President Akufo-Addo to refrain from the assertion that he won an outright victory in the December 7 presidential polls.
According to the group, the outcome of the elections show clearly that the Electoral Commission manipulated the election results in favour of the New Patriotic Party.
A statement issued on Friday, January 8, 2021 by the Respect My Vote Movement and copied to the Awake News said, “We wish to remind Akufo-Addo that he is just a caretaker president and that his inauguration means nothing until the true will of the people is confirmed by the Supreme Court”.
This comes after the swearing-in of Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo as President-elect of Ghana’s fourth republic.
The pressure group disclosed that the ruling NPP used foul means to subvert the will of the people” thus their administration being in disarray.
“At present, Akufo-Addo’s party the NPP is struggling with its numbers in Parliament and is using foul means to subvert the will of the people”.
“As someone who claims to be a democrat, Akufo-Addo should be concerned about these developments. Unfortunately, he’s not because he is a direct beneficiary of the embarrassment his government and the EC have brought to Ghana, it added.
The leadership of the NDC rejected the results of the December 7 presidential elections following the declaration of incumbent Akufo-Addo as president-elect by the EC Chairperson, Jean Mensa. It presidential candidate, John Mahama is now contesting the legitimacy of the outcome in court.
“It is important to note that the case before the Supreme Court is not about interpretation or any other legal theories that the court can manipulate. It is simply for the Electoral Commission to demonstrate how it arrived at the figures and declared Akufo-Addo President contrary to the constitutional requirement of 50 percent plus one, the statement read.
