The President of the Confederation of African Football (CAF), Patrice Motsepe, has expressed concern over the inability of Ghana and other African countries to host home games on their own soil.
His comments follow CAF’s decision to revoke the license of the Baba Yara Stadium, declaring it unfit to host international matches.
As a result, Ghana is unable to host its upcoming October AFCON qualifiers, as there is no stadium in the country that meets the required Category C standard. The Black Stars are likely to play their next AFCON qualifier against Sudan in either Nigeria, Togo, or Côte d’Ivoire.
Addressing the press in Nairobi, Kenya, Mr. Motsepe said “Nothing frustrates me more than a national team or club side having to play home matches outside”.
He added “You can’t grow football if the national teams or club sides aren’t playing in front of their home fans. Our conversations in every country is to make sure there is at least one stadium capable of hosting a CAF category C game”.
