Xabi Alonso has officially returned to Real Madrid, this time as head coach, signing a three-year contract that runs until June 2028.

His first major assignment will be leading the Spanish giants at the Club World Cup this summer, following Carlo Ancelotti’s departure to manage Brazil’s national team.

A former midfield maestro, Alonso is widely regarded as one of Real Madrid’s greatest legends. Between 2009 and 2014, he played 236 official matches, scored six goals, and provided 31 assists.

During that period, he helped the club secure six major trophies, including the historic tenth UEFA Champions League title in Lisbon, one La Liga title, two Copa del Rey crowns, a Spanish Super Cup, and a UEFA Super Cup.

Now, Alonso returns not just as a familiar face, but as one of the most promising coaches in world football. His coaching journey began at Real Madrid’s youth academy in 2018, where he guided the U14 A team to league and Champions Tournament victories. Since then, his tactical acumen and leadership have drawn widespread praise.

Real Madrid have already begun rebuilding under Alonso’s leadership ahead of the 2025–26 season. The club has signed centre-back Dean Huijsen and is reportedly pursuing right-back Trent Alexander-Arnold. Negotiations are also underway for Benfica’s promising left-back Álvaro Carreras.

Alonso shared his vision with fans: “We want the fans to be proud. We want to transmit emotion and joy. If we can ignite that spark, we will become an unstoppable force. We believe we can achieve great things.”

As Real Madrid enters a new era, all eyes will be on Alonso to carry forward the club’s winning legacy with a fresh perspective and bold leadership.
