A team of four members of the World Teakwando Peace Corps arrived in the country last night from Seoul, South Korea to engage school children in Taekwondo training.
Speaking to Awake News’ Abdul-Iddrisu Faisel, the Public Relations Officer of the Ghana Taekwondo Federation, Davis Attuquaye Clottey, confirmed the arrival of four members of the TPC, and added that, the team’s engagement is aimed at promoting friendship and collaboration with beneficiary countries.
“Their coming is an annual event that is aimed at promoting friendship and collaboration between South Korea and the beneficiary countries. Four members of the team touched down in the country last night; the four includes a demonstration specialist and an interpreter who would help the team during their stay here”, he said.
The team is expected to start training tomorrow at the Ashiaman school for the deaf. The team would proceed to schools in Dansoman, Tema and Ashiaman to engage children between the ages of 6 years to 15 years for a period of a 40 days, before departing on February 15th.
According to Mr. Clottey, it is the expectation of the Ghana Taekwondo Federation that more schools show interest in the discipline, to be able to nurture potentials for international championships.
“We expect more schools to show interest in the art of Taekwondo and form school clubs with support from both school authorities and parents.”
“The Ghana Taekwando Federation will love to start unearthing young athletes for the future. Should we get those young ones whose parents are ready to sponsor them for international championships, it will be beneficial to us, the nation as a whole and to the individual athlete as well, with laurels awaiting them in the future.”
