Chairman Wontumi, officially known as Bernard Antwi Boasiako, is now a free man. The Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) released the Ashanti Regional NPP Chairman after he fulfilled his GH¢50 million bail conditions.
His legal team, led by Andy Appiah-Kubi, withdrew a motion on Monday, June 2, that sought to review the bail terms. The motion had been filed on May 30 and scheduled for hearing on June 3. However, lawyers said the move to challenge the bail was made without Wontumi’s consent, which caused delays in his release.
He secured bail on May 28 with two justified sureties. Though the conditions were met by May 30, he remained in custody until the motion was withdrawn.
NPP General Secretary Justin Kodua confirmed his release late Monday at the EOCO headquarters.
“Chairman Wontumi has been released and is home relaxing. We’ll share more updates soon. Let’s thank Bryan Acheampong for his support,” he told party supporters.
Ongoing Investigations
Wontumi’s legal troubles are far from over. He remains under investigation for serious crimes, including fraud, money laundering, and causing financial loss to the state.
Deputy Attorney General Justice Srem-Sai revealed on X (formerly Twitter) that EOCO is working with international law enforcement agencies.
“There’s a second strand to this case, involving international organised crime,” he disclosed.
Investigators are also pursuing asset recovery linked to the alleged offences.
As part of his bail terms, Wontumi is expected to cooperate fully with EOCO as the probe continues.
