NPP's Ashanti Regional Chairman - Mr. Bernard Antwi Boasiako

Ashanti Regional NPP Chairman Bernard Antwi Boasiako, widely known as Chairman Wontumi, has accused a joint team of police and National Security operatives of intimidation and abuse of power following a raid on his residence.

According to Wontumi, the incident began when five vehicles pulled up at his home. Officers tried to search the property without presenting a warrant, prompting a confrontation. “So why this intimidation?” he questioned during an interview on Asempa FM’s Ekosiisen.

He stated that after raising an alarm and calling colleagues, the officers left, only to return with around 100 armed security personnel. He alleged that they came with rifles, hammers, pickaxes, and canes and tried to break down his door. A helicopter was also reportedly stationed nearby, ready to fly him to Tamale following a potential arrest.

Democracy at Risk and Business Allegations Denied

Wontumi warned that the incident threatens Ghana’s democracy. “If care is not taken, I fear the nation could be heading towards a military coup,” he said, criticizing President Mahama for allowing what he termed as lawless behavior.

He claimed all his bank accounts, including those linked to Akonta Mining and other businesses, have been frozen. Addressing illegal mining allegations, he explained that he hasn’t visited his concession in seven years, instead leasing the land for coconut farming. Over 18,000 coconut trees have been planted, with a plan to grow 32,000 more.

He denied ever entering the Samreboi forest and insisted that he holds proper documentation for all his mining concessions, comparable to that of established firms like AngloGold and Newmont.

Wontumi also revealed he is suing the Minister for Lands and Natural Resources, Emmanuel Armah-Kofi Buah, for blocking his operations despite his legal licenses.
