The Member of Parliament for Ningo Prampram, Samuel Nartey George, has assured members of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) and Ghanaians that they the majority caucus will occupy the majority side in Parliament on Tuesday, October 22, despite an injunction from the Supreme Court.
Sam George comments comes after the Supreme Court injuncted a ruling from the speaker of parliament that declared four seats vacant. The speaker of parliament Alban Sumanah Bagbin on October 17, 2024 declared vacant four seats of parliamentarians who declared to run independent in the 2024 election or cross carpet to a different party.
The ruling by the speaker did not sit well with the NPP, which led to Afenyo Markins the minority leader seeking an injunction at the SC staying the speaker’s decision until the issue is resolved or its legality is ruled on.
Speaking at a National Democratic Congress (NDC) victory walk event in the North Tongu constituency on Saturday, Sam George criticized the judiciary of interference in the work of parliament.
The Ningo Prampram law maker indicated that despite the court’s ruling, the NDC now majority caucus is committed to its planned action in Parliament.
“Take this recording to the Chief Justice that I said, I am now the vice chairman of the select committee on communication because I am part of the Majority. Tell the judiciary that enough of the politics in our judiciary.
“The Supreme Court is a judicial wing not an extension of the NPP headquarters. The people of Ghana are fed up with the political decision and as a parliamentary caucus, we will stand up to defend the will of the people and defend their integrity and independence of Parliament.
“But this defence is not going to only end on Tuesday. It starts from Tuesday till John Mahama is sworn in on January 7, 2025, and John Mahama needs a solid parliament. He needs men he can rely on,” Sam George remarked.
