Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim has expressed the need for the club to sign more players with the same qualities as Bruno Fernandes after the captain’s impressive performance in the 1-1 draw with Arsenal on Sunday.

Fernandes scored the opening goal and played a pivotal role in United’s overall display, showcasing both his skill and leadership. Amorim highlighted that players like Fernandes, who possess not only technical ability but also character, are essential for United moving forward.

Since Sir Alex Ferguson’s retirement, United has spent nearly £1.3 billion on new signings, a sum that exceeds that of any other club globally during this period.

However, despite this huge outlay, only a few players have had a lasting impact, with Fernandes standing out as one of the most successful acquisitions in recent years.

Discussing United’s recruitment, Amorim noted that while coaches do thorough research before making signings, the character and adaptability of players can’t always be predicted.

“It’s about getting players who are not only skilled but also have the right mentality, like Bruno. He’s someone who is always available, and that is crucial in this league,” he explained.

Though Fernandes’ emotional displays on the pitch have often drawn criticism, particularly from former United captain Roy Keane, Amorim sees his captain’s passion as a strength. “Bruno is always there when the team needs him—whether it’s to score, assist, or take a set-piece. He’s always willing to play in different roles, and he leads by example. Even when he makes mistakes, that’s part of being a player, but his desire to win makes him a valuable asset,” Amorim added.

Amorim also suggested that Fernandes should serve as a model for United’s recruitment strategy, particularly as the club looks to make key signings in the upcoming transfer window. The manager believes that players with the same attitude and resilience as Fernandes could help the club achieve greater success.
