The New Patriotic Party (NPP) is facing renewed criticism from one of its own stalwarts, Dr. Arthur Kobina Kennedy, who believes the party should embark on an apology tour rather than a thank you tour.
Speaking on Joy News’ PM Express, Dr. Kennedy asserted that the NPP has more to atone for than to celebrate, citing the party’s failures in governance as the reason.
“I actually think that we need an apology tour rather than a thank you tour,” Dr. Kennedy declared. “We should be apologizing to the country for our bad governance.”
He argued that the party’s declining public trust stems from its inability to confront the real reasons behind its defeat.
Dr. Kennedy emphasized the need for genuine repentance and accountability within the party, suggesting that an internal accountability process would help restore the party’s image.
“We should also have an accountability process in which we should hold to account the leaders of our previous government and agencies whose mis-governance, arrogance, and corruption caused our defeat,” he said.
The physician-turned-politician also raised concerns about internal tensions within the party following the presidential primaries, which he described as being characterized by “a little bit of rancour.”
He noted that the party has not done enough to heal the wounds, citing reports of physical altercations during the recent Thank You Tour.
“It is clear that Dr. Bawumia is trying to make his case ahead of his competitors,” Dr. Kennedy observed. “The public is watching. We need to show that we’ve learned from our mistakes. A Thank You Tour doesn’t do that.”
Dr. Kennedy stressed that the path to electoral success lies not in performance tours but in sincere introspection, warning that the NPP’s current approach may not yield the desired results.
“That will give us more credibility with the public,” he added.
