The opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) has announced they will stage a nationwide demonstration on September 17, 2024 over what they described as the Electoral Commission’s (EC) mishandling of irregularities found in the voter register.
The NDC’s concerns comes on the back of claims that they have identified numerous discrepancies in the register including some Ghanaians complaints that their votes have been transferred without their consent or knowledge during the just ended voter exhibition exercise.
The NDC does had a meeting with the EC requesting that a forensic audit of the register be done, but this request was rejected.
NDC Chairman Johnson Asiedu Nketiah, speaking to the media after submitting John Mahama’s presidential nomination forms, revealed that the party would stage nationwide protests.
Demonstrators are expected to march to the EC’s regional offices across all 16 regions, while the national leadership will deliver a formal petition at the EC’s headquarters in Accra.
Asiedu Nketiah stated, “On September 17, the NDC will launch a massive protest in every regional capital. We will gather at the offices of the Electoral Commission, and in Accra, we will march to the headquarters and submit additional petitions, pressing for the Commission to act in a way that ensures a peaceful, free, and fair election.”
