The President, Nana Akufo-Addo made the announcement of the cash reward when the victorious Ghana team and officials of the Ghana Football Association called on him at the seat of government on [ads1]Tuesday.

Speaking at the function, the President intimated that the $100,000 reward is separate from the other US$100,000 which the team will receive from organizers for emerging champions of the 16-team competition.

”Let me state how delighted I am to have you here, you have brought a lot of joy to this house and also to the whole of Ghana and we are here to congratulate you very warmly on your achievements. You have demonstrated the spirit of team work and hard work. I have been told that you have received a $100,000 for your efforts which is great because you agreed to play the tournament without any winning bonus. As a token of appreciation, I am also going to add a further $100,000 for this exceptional feat.”

Ghana Football Association President Kwesi Nyantakyi, who led the team to the seat of government thanked the president and the government for granting approval to host the tournament in the first place.

He also thanked the various government agencies who he said “did an excellent job ensuring that Ghana hosted a successful tournament.

Nyantakyi also stressed the fact that hosting the WAFU competition had significant impact on the economies of the cities where the tournament was hosted.

The Stars thumped arch-rivals Nigeria 4-1 on Sunday to win the giant trophy at the Cape Coast stadium.

Two of Ghana’s players, striker Stephen Sarfo and captain Isaac Twum finished the tournament as top scorer and best player respectively.
