The Chiefs and people of the Volo Traditional area in the North Tongu district of the Volta region has called on the various security agencies and councils to intervene and put to order one Mr. Kwame Akwetey, whose actions the council described as exploitative and undermines the peace of the area.
According to the council, Mr. Kwame Akwetey -native of Kelorkpo, in February this year, led a team of men to erect two demarcation pillars in the heart of the Volo township; a move the council says denotes ‘a claim of ownership of the land’.
At a press briefing on behalf of the Paramount Chief and President of the council, Togbe Kwaku Abliza IV, on Tuesday, 15th September, 2020 the Manklalo -Togbe Awuku Avovutor III, indicated that attempts to get the accused person to come and explain his actions have since proven futile.
He said, “On February 13th, 2020 one Kwame Akwetey of Kelorkpo and his team erected two demarcation pillars in the heart of Volo and claimed and told us, when questioned that he was doing so under the command of the Volta regional Lands Commission. We followed up with a petition to the Lands Commission, to demand answers for that action, only to be told that they were innocent and had no knowledge about the action taken by Mr. Akwetey.
Following the response from the Lands Commission, we summoned the accused [Mr. Akwetey], before the Battor Traditional Council, a jurisdiction he hails from, to come and explain his actions to us but he failed to show up again; whereas the Battor Traditional Council forwarded to us a letter from a supposed lawyer of Mr. Akwetey indicating that he had traveled out of the country and would not be able to appear before the traditional authorities and since then, he can not be traced.”
The council further stated that the action taken by the accused, Mr. Kwame Akwetey has huge consequences that awaits the future and could jeopardize the peace of the area if not addressed as early.
“Since Mr. Akwetey’s action against we the people of Volo could trigger a misunderstanding that could disturb the future of the peace we are enjoying, we humbly seek the intervention of the National Security Council, the Regional Security Council and the North Tongu District Security Council to bring him and his team to order to avert any possible clash,” the statement read.
