Residents of Tafi Atome in the Afadzato South District in the Volta region are under threat of an eminent outbreak of cholera and other deadly diseases as the community is engulfed with filth and other unhygienic conditions.
The community which is well-known in the tourism sector as a result of the Tafi Atome Monkey Sanctuary is battling environmental sanitation problems including open defecation and indiscriminate dumping of waste due to lack of a sustainable and manageable facility.
Residents have since opted for the use of the forest and open spaces to address the inconveniences of nature as two 16-seater toilet facilities which are filled to the brim.
The community is said to have been without refuse containers, contributing to the excessive heaping of refuse around every point of the community -making the well-known tourist destination unkempt and unhealthy.
Some residents who spoke to our reporter expressed worry over the trend of events and called on stakeholders to act swiftly to avert any communicable disease.
“The Afadzato South district assembly through the Health directorate, DCE and the MP should in collaboration with chiefs, elders and other community agencies to organise a clean-up exercise to clear the excessive heap of refuse in the forest, provide refuse containers and to also collect the waste material from the toilet facilities to restrain residents from messing-up the surroundings to improve sanitation and to also promote ecotourism in the community,” a resident said.
Whereas the district assembly is making attempts to improve on its gains from the tourism sector, sanitation may be the first thing to battle.
