The Akatsi North Constituency Chairman of the National Democratic Congress, Richard Awudza has stated that claims by government that it had consultations with religious groups before easing the restrictions on public gathering is either false or a failed consultation.

According to Mr. Awudza, the decision to ease the restrictions by President Nana Addo Dankwa Akuffo-Addo was purely political without any logic.

“I doubt if the President really consulted the religious bodies before easing the restrictions. It’s evident in the reactions of the churches which have still remained closed despite the announcement,” he said, while adding that, “even if that consultation was done, then it was a failed consultation.”

Though President Nana Addo announced that religious bodies including churches and mosques can now hold congregational prayers with not more than 100 persons, several churches across the country have decided to remain closed amidst the Covid-19 pandemic.

The Muslim community, upon a directive from the National Chief Imam have also decided to continue to suspend congregational prayers.

Mr. Awudza who is also the Volta NDC’s Constituency Chairmen Co-ordinator, believes that the move by the President was only meant to allow the National Identification Authority and the Electoral Commission to pursue their intended registrations in the interest of the NPP.

He said, “There are churches in Ghana that could accommodate over 5000 congregrants and so, the maximum number of 100 is simply disproportionate, while the shrines have also resumed operations without any proper guidelines. This whole thing makes no sense.

I can confidently say that this decision by Nana Addo is to create the avenue for the NIA and the Electoral Commission to continue with their diabolic rigging plans ahead of the 2020 general elections.”
