Prof. Naana Jean Opuku-Agyemang

The Ho West Youth Congress (HoYCo), a development and youth empowerment advocacy group has lauded the selection of Prof. Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang as the running mate for Flagbearer of the opposition National Democratic Congress, John Dramani Mahama.

The former Education Minister was announced on Monday, July 6, 2020 by the NDC as the one to partner the flagbearer for the 2020 elections after an approval from the National Executive Committee and the National Council of Elders at a meeting held in Accra.

According to a press statement issued by Tuesday 7 July, 2020 by the Convenor of HoYCo, Nutifafa Kristo Kofi, the group expressed joy over the announcement, while stating that the announcement has indicated a shift from the conventional practices employed in the past in selecting such people.

“The Presidential ticket of the ruling New Patriotic Party had long been logically presumed, leading to a debate that had created intensity and anxiety among political watchers about the caliber of person that may be nominated be Mr. John Dramani Mahama for the December elections. Our group was equally, and justifiably anxious too about what was coming,” the statement added.

The statement also added that, “It is noteworthy that this particular nomination is a shift from the conventional practice of looking mainly at regional balance in seeking a running mate, to the selection of the first female candidate by any of our major political parties with a realistic chance of winning the general election since the beginning of the Fourth Republic.”

The HoYCo also reckoned that the selection of Prof. Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang is historic and appropriate, given her records and achievements as a public servant and a politician.

The HoYCo also reiterates a high level of good feeling that has come with the nomination while congratulating the former Vice Chancellor of the University of Cape Coast.
