Addressing the press at an end of year party at the Volta Regional Headquarters of the Ghana Police Service in Ho, the Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCOP) Ebenezer Francis Doku was excited to say that the region has recorded a significant reduction in crime rate in the year 2018 as against that of 2017.
He noted therefore that, the statistic is a testament to the hard work of the Ghana Police in the region.
“I dare say that police in the Volta region has not been sleeping on the job at all and this is proven by the crime statistics of the year 2017 as against 2018”, he said.
According to the statistics released this week, there have been marginal reductions in crimes relating to murder, fraud, rape, defilement, and child trafficking, whereas there was no case of manslaughter in 2018 as against 2017.
The figures for attempted murder, however, increased from 12 in 2017 to 21 in 2018 with about 75% increment.
Cases of fraud reduced from 656 in 2017, to 238 cases in 2018.
Reported cases of rape declined from 47 in 2017 to 33 in 2018, representing a decline of 29.8%. While defilement cases recorded a marginal decline from 173 cases in 2017 to 157 cases in 2018, representing a decline of 9.2%.
Child trafficking also reduced from 17 cases in 2017 to just 2 in 2018.
The service, however, recorded an increase in forgery cases, unauthorized possession of firearms and possession of illicit drugs.
DCOP Ebenezer Francis Doku, has therefore called on the general public and the media to support them in making efforts to bring crime issues to the barest minimum.
He added that “It is, however the duty of the Regional Command to bring crime to the barest minimum and it is on this note that I urge the media and the Public to cooperate with the police in ensuring safety, security, and peace in our communities”.
