This would only be possible if Ghana puts in a proposal to the US, the US High Commissioner to Ghana said.

It has been about three weeks now since President Akufo-Addo tasked the leadership of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) and New Patriotic Party (NPP) to discuss possible ways of disbanding and disarming political vigilantism.

Nonetheless, the NDC had argued that other parties including civil society organisations (CSOs) and in their latest letter to the Presidency, suggested the inclusion of African Union (AU) and multi-stakeholders to such an important meeting.

But, the government and NPP had countered the proposals by the NDC, saying the NDC was making it difficult and demonstrating their unwillingness to ‘kill’ political vigilantism.

Meanwhile, the Pentecostal Council and other CSOs had seconded the proposals by the NDC, which the government and NPP had sought to rubbish.

In her three-day visit of the Northern Region, Stephanie Sullivan, US Ambassador to Ghana, added her voice to the immediate disbanding of political vigilantism and said her government was ready to be part of the guests that have huge interest in bringing an end to political thuggery in Ghana.

“The US government can only be part of this important discussion if a proposal is sent to it,” she explained.

In spite of the insecurity in Ghana due to the activities of these political vigilantes especially since the baton of government changed hands in 2016, Stephanie Selivan commended the Government of Ghana for its consistent support for keeping peace in Africa and the world.

“Ghana’s unrelenting support for peace is remarkable and we commend it for that commitment,” she praised.
