The National Film Authority (NFA) has warned that television stations airing content without proper authorization risk having their licenses suspended or revoked.

In a statement, the NFA expressed concern about the increasing unauthorized use and broadcast of creative works on various traditional and digital TV platforms in Ghana, describing the practice as a violation of copyright laws that threaten the integrity and sustainability of the country’s creative ecosystem.

“Infringements violate content creators’ rights and discourage investment and creativity in Ghana’s creative industries,” said Kafui Danku Pitcher, Executive Secretary of the NFA.

The Authority noted that it has received numerous complaints in recent months from both local and international content owners regarding the illegal airing of films, series, and other creative works.

The NFA reminded broadcasters that Ghana’s Copyright Act, 2005 (Act 690), and other applicable laws, clearly prohibit the public performance or broadcast of copyrighted material without the rights holder’s permission.

“This is illegal and punishable by law,” Pitcher emphasized.

Regulatory Action Underway

As the national regulator of the film and audiovisual sector, the NFA stated it is committed to protecting the rights of content producers. The Authority is working closely with relevant institutions to investigate reports and take appropriate enforcement action.

“Offenders risk having their licenses suspended or revoked,” the NFA warned.

Call for Compliance

The NFA urged all television stations to:

  • Regularize all content by securing appropriate licensing agreements.
  • Respect intellectual property rights.
  • Uphold ethical broadcasting standards.
  • Cooperate with the NFA by ensuring all films and audiovisual content are classified before airing.

Ghana’s creative economy, the NFA stressed, holds enormous potential for national development, job creation, and international recognition. However, its growth depends heavily on respecting intellectual property rights.

The Authority called on broadcasters to license content legally, fairly compensate creators, and join efforts to build a thriving, lawful creative industry.
