Veteran politician and former Ghanaian Ambassador to the Netherlands, Dr. Tony Aidoo, has delivered a candid evaluation of President John Dramani Mahama’s current administration, urging stronger and more decisive action, particularly in tackling the menace of illegal mining.

Speaking in a recent interview, the staunch National Democratic Congress (NDC) stalwart applauded some positive developments under the Mahama-led government but expressed deep concern over the ongoing devastation caused by illegal mining, commonly known as galamsey.

He questioned why the administration has not taken more aggressive steps to halt the destruction of Ghana’s rivers and forests.

“Why can’t the president declare a state of emergency in those areas? Why can’t he repeal the law that allows people to mine in our forests?” Dr. Aidoo quizzed, insisting that bold leadership is necessary to protect Ghana’s environment for future generations.

Reflecting on Ghana’s political journey, Dr. Aidoo praised the contributions of past administrations, including those of former Presidents Jerry John Rawlings and John Evans Atta Mills.

However, he emphasized that Ghana’s first President, Dr. Kwame Nkrumah, still stands out as the country’s greatest leader.

“Nkrumah may have had his flaws, but the infrastructure, educational reforms, and healthcare systems he put in place are still benefiting us today,” Dr. Aidoo noted.

He called for a renewed commitment from today’s leaders to rise above partisan politics and work in the national interest, especially in confronting the complex and urgent issues facing the country.
