[ads1]ABEDI AYEW PELE – #ThrowBackFriday – THE FIRST BBC AFRICAN SPORTS STAR OF THE YEAR: Neil Curry (my editor/mentor) and I with Abedi Pele sometime in 1992, when he received us in his home where we presented him with the award.
(Martin Martin Davies and Jenny Horrocks worked very hard to institute this award.) Abedi was dominant and brilliant in Bernard Tapie’s Marseilles team at the time.
Dede (his son, now shining in Swansea City) was a little man then. Abedi has since gone on to nurture two – corrected, THREE – sons into national soccer stars for Ghana. He also mentored his brother Kwame, who also played for Ghana’s Black Stars. GHANA/AFRICA needs more Abedis. ABEDI, I salute.
