Sammy Adu Boakye, the Chairman of the Heal Komfo Anokye Hospital Project, has bemoaned the crippling attitude of the Ghanaian government towards healthcare in the country. He took to social media to express his frustrations. This is after the Ghana Revenue Authority slapped taxes of over GHS1.7 million on imports of tiles for the Teaching Hospital in Kumasi.
According to Mr Adu Boakye, the project is something the government should have done, but successive governments have shown no concern. It is thus disturbing that when citizens step in to help, the government is hungry to tax.
He revealed that 10 containers of tiles meant for the Heal the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital Project arrived at Tema Port, and taxes of GH₵1, 714, 265.13 were applied. According to him, more containers of materials will come through the port for the project, the cost of which is on the donors, including demurrage, which is 1500 USD per day.
Sammy Adu Boakye noted that he wrote to the Finance Ministry two months ago but has not received a reply, meaning no help has so far come from the government.

Hmmm Abusuafoɔ!
Heal Komfo Anokye project was supposed to be done by a government who is serious about the health-being of this country.
People out of their misery have donated their widow’s might to support a project that is supposed to be done by the Government. 10 containers of materials for HKATH have arrived at Tema Port and the government is charging 1.8 million cedis as duty lol.
This government knows no shame!
How then do we have to pay duty and other taxes to the government when we are doing what successive governments have ignored for seventy years by asking for money from ordinary Ghanaians?
It’s a pity…. 1.8 million cedis for 10 containers of tiles, not to mention electrical and plumbing materials yet to come. Letters written to the finance minister through the chief director nearly two months ago is yet to be acknowledged.
Demmurage charges have already been set, which are about 1500 USD a day.
Albeit these setbacks, I extend sincere appreciation to our gallant donors who have demonstrated that theyrcare about the health needs of the ordinary Ghanaian on the street. I will also continue to appeal to all well meaning Ghanaians, both home and abroad, who are yet to donate to kindly come on board. To the many corporate institutions yet to respond to His majesty’s call, we wait as you all prepare to come and donate generously to this great course.
To the management, board all workers of KATH, thank you for the support.
Regards
