The Minority in Parliament has called out Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, the flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), for being tight-lipped about the collapse of the economy.

During the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) manifesto launch in Takoradi on Sunday, August 18, Dr. Bawumia highlighted several policies that his future government would implement if elected. Some of these initiatives include reducing port duties and running a lean government with 50 ministers.

However, the Deputy Minority Chief Whip, Ahmed Ibrahim, stated that the NPP and its flagbearer were not truthful to Ghanaians regarding debt servicing.

According to him, it was a failure on the part of Dr. Bawumia and his party to remain silent on debt servicing and hide it from Ghanaians. He further explained that the government has deferred the payment of these loans to 2026, which, he said, will make it difficult for the next government.

“You have collapsed the economy and the most serious thing that I was waiting to hear from them was how we are going to deal with the challenge of servicing our debt. I didn’t hear that thing from them. It means they were not trustworthy, and they were not straightforward with Ghanaians,” the deputy minority whip said.

Mr. Ibrahim reiterated “Let Ghanaians know that, look, we are not servicing our debt now. We are not paying our loans now. We have been given a period to pay in 2026. Therefore, in 2026, when we start paying our debt, this will be a hardship and challenge because we are deferring all our suffering.”
