Suspected cable thief electrocuted at ECG substation in Kumasi

A devastating incident occurred in the early hours of Saturday, April 19, 2025, at an Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) substation in Adoato, near the Metro Mass Transit Station in Kumasi, Ashanti Region.

A man in his late 30s was electrocuted while allegedly attempting to steal an earth cable, causing a power outage that affected several areas in Greater Kumasi.

According to Benjamin Obeng Antwi, Public Relations Officer for ECG Ashanti West, the individual tried to tamper with the earth cable, resulting in the fatal shock.

This incident highlights the growing concern of theft and vandalism targeting critical infrastructure, including transformers, cables, and protective equipment.

“We humbly appeal to the general public, especially individuals involved in this illegal act to desist from this illegal act, because this illegal acts affect the provision of stable power supply in the region and could also lead to the loss of lives as we saw this morning,” Obeng Antwi emphasized in an interview with Channel One News.

The Ashanti Regional Police Command has been notified and is handling the removal of the body and subsequent investigations.

ECG engineers are working tirelessly to restore power to affected customers. This incident serves as a stark reminder of the dangers associated with electricity theft and the importance of protecting critical infrastructure.
