Supt. Salifu Dagarti was a Ghanaian police officer and presidential bodyguard who made the ultimate sacrifice to save President Kwame Nkrumah’s life during an assass!nat!on attempt on January 2, 1964.

On January 2, 1964, Constable Ametewee, one of the policemen on guard at Flagstaff House, f!red five gunshots at President Nkrumah. Dagarti shielded the President with his body and was mortally wounded. Despite wearing a bulletproof vest, the President’s shirt was ripped by one or two bullets. Dagarti’s actions saved the President’s life, but he succumbed to his injuries
Legacy:
Dagarti received a full military burial for gallantry and was buried at the Osu military cemetery. He was remembered as an outstanding officer with a high sense of responsibility by the Commissioner of Police, Mr. E.R.T. Madjitey. His story serves as a testament to his bravery, loyalty, and dedication to duty.
