According to reports, heavy refuse was seen floating on the Odaw River, which overflowed its banks.

Other silted drains in and around the area were reportedly flooded too, and these inconvenienced motorists and commuters who plied the Kwame Nkrumah Interchange.

The stagnant rainwater rose to the knee level of the adult person and the height of the water, the report said, disabled vehicles stuck in the flood.

The flooding stretched to about 500 meters towards the Ring Road.

One lifeless human body was found in a drain near Awudome and a team from NADMO, Fire Service and Ambulance Service arrived at the Kwame Nkrumah Interchange and Awudome thirty minutes after the rains had subsided to assist persons who had stuck in the flood.

So far, five deaths have been recorded which was confirmed by the Greater Accra Regional Director of NADMO, Archibald Cobbinah in an interview on Accra-based Starr FM.

He said bodies of a woman and her child, two men and another who was electrocuted have been conveyed to the morgue.

Meanwhile, the Accra Metropolitan Assembly said it would move in to raze all unauthorised buildings along drains at the Kwame Nkrumah Circle and flood-prone areas to save human lives.

The AMA expressed worry at how poor sanitation by indiscipline Ghanaians continued to register flooding in the nation’s capital anytime it rains.

The Assembly said it would embark on desilting of the Odaw River, which is always silted.
