Martin Amidu, the former Attorney General and Special Prosecutor of Ghana, has called for an end to the harmful practice of associating entire governments and political parties with the actions of individual wrongdoers.
In an open letter, Amidu reflected on how this trend, which began in 2001 under the Kufuor administration, has negatively impacted Ghana’s governance and legal systems.
He argued that the real issue lies not with the government or political party, but with the individuals who use their positions for personal gain.
Amidu emphasized that conflating political parties with crimes committed by certain individuals only politicizes justice, making it more difficult to hold the real offenders accountable.
Amidu urged the public and political leaders to focus on individual accountability rather than dragging entire parties into the discussion, as this approach does more harm than good to the country’s legal and political processes.
