The Ghana Tertiary Education Commission has warned universities that operate satellite campuses at unapproved centres including Senior High School campuses to cease. He said the act does not support quality learning while also denying technical universities to students.

Speaking at the 12th Congregation of Bolgatanga Technical University, the Director-General of GTEC, Prof. Ahmed Abdulai Jinapor said increasing numbers of satellite campuses are impeding the growth of technical universities.

“It is of no surprise that in a school like Bolgatanga Senior High School. There can be about five different traditional universities running distance education programmes for students.”

To tackle the menace, Prof. Jinapor noted GTEC has reached out to the affected universities to reach a consensus and draw path towards the closure of those centres. He said as part of the efforts, GTEC signed a memorandum of understanding with at least six institutions for them to stop admitting new students to some 210 satellite campuses.

“We have asked all these institutions to cease operations of satellite campuses in such environments moving forward. I am happy to announce that GTEC has signed a Memorandum of Understanding with about six institutions to halt the admission of students into about 210 satellite campuses going forward.”

According to Prof. Jinapor, the move will protect Ghana’s technical universities, something he says is very important for the country’s development. “It is important for all technical universities to be protected and that is what GTEC is working toward,” he said per Graphic.
