Energy Minister and Member of Parliament (MP) for the Yapei-Kusawgu Constituency in the Savannah Region, John Abdulai Jinapor, has issued a stern warning to state institutions and other entities owing the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG), declaring that their power supply will be disconnected if they fail to settle their outstanding debts.

The Minister’s ultimatum comes amid a troubling backdrop of inconsistent power supply affecting businesses and households, as well as a scandal involving missing ECG containers at the port, which has raised corruption concerns.

Speaking on GhOne earlier on Wednesday, April 2, which was monitored by Awake News, Jinapor revealed that numerous state agencies, including Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Assemblies (MMDAs), are defaulting on their electricity payments, severely hampering ECG’s operations.

He further singled out Ghana Water Company as a major defaulter in the payment of electricity bills.

“Ghana Water has not paid even one cedi, and I’ve written to the President,” Jinapor stated, adding that “if they continue like that, we’ll cut them. If Ghana Water continues to sell water, collect money, and not pay their electricity bills, we’ll be compelled to cut them because you [Ghanaians] are paying, and so they ought to pay.”

Other prominent institutions, including Parliament and the Ghana Broadcasting Corporation (GBC), were also cautioned.

“We are going to follow a programme where ordinary consumers like you and I will pay, but also institutions like Parliament, Ghana Water, GBC, for instance, if we cut them, they had to come and give us a payment plan,” he said.

The Minister’s tough stance underscores the government’s push to ensure financial discipline among state agencies while safeguarding ECG’s ability to deliver reliable power to Ghanaians.
