The Afram Plains Development Organization in collaboration with WaterAid and Krachi East District Assembly have donated a mechanized four (4) water system and two (2) borehole with a solar panel at the cost of GH¢263,806 to six communities in the Krachi East District of the Volta Region of Ghana.
The beneficiary communities include Ayirafie Bator, Nwane, Pamfreh, [ads1]Bidi-Kofe, Odumasi, and Ador Kofe all in the Krachi East with Bidi- Kofe alone having a population of more than one thousand (1,000) people.
The mechanized water system which were handed over to the communities are supported with pumps and overhead tanks that aids distribution of the water at various points in the communities.
Speaking at the handing over ceremony, Mr. A.Y.O. Modoc, the Executive Director of Afram Plains Development Organization (APDO) stated that though majority of the human body is made up of water, people end up drinking
contaminated water due lack of good drinking water.
“We all know that water takes at least 70% in our body system, but some of us end up drinking contaminated water, although some people are very aware of the implications yet have no option than to drink, since that’s their only source of drinking water” – Mr. Modoc said
Some of the residents who spoke to Awake News’ Christiana Ativi after the handing over ceremony on Wednesday July 12, 2017 said, the only source of drinking water for them was the Oti River which is highly contaminated with animals waste especially cows, pigs and dogs. According to them, they are really aware that the water was contaminated but still use it for their house holds chores since that was all they have.
They therefore expressed appreciation to the organization behind project saying it brings them live and joy.
Mr. A.Y.O. Modoc, the Executive Director of APDO urged the Water and Sanitation Board WATSAN, the headman for area Torgbe David Adanya, and the entire members in the community to make good use of the water system for their own benefit.
The project has since been handed over to the Water and Sanitation Board of the beneficiary communities under the supervision of the Krachi East District Assembly who takes full responsibility of managing the facilities.
