Mrs. Perpetual Ofori-Ampofo, the President of the Ghana Registered Nurses and Midwives Association (GRNMA), has shared GH¢76,000.00 among five nurses across three Districts in the Upper East Region.

The gesture was intended to support the nurses who suffered various health conditions, including a victim of a fire disaster, stationed in the Bolgatanga Municipality, and the Talensi and Kassena-Nankana West Districts.

Ms Mary Amoah, a victim of the fire disaster and staff at the Regional Hospital in the Bolgatanga Municipality, received a cheque for GH¢6,000.00 out of the total amount, while Mr Solomon Apana Abase, based in the Kassena-Nankana West District, received GH¢10,000.00.

In the Talensi District, Mr Nathan Sebire, the Talensi District Hospital staffer, received a cheque for GH¢40,000, while Ms Olivia Apolala Awurugo, also the hospital staffer, and Ms Charlotte Ayamga, a Public Health Nurse in the District, each received GH¢10,000.00.

The cheques were presented on behalf of Mrs Ofori-Ampofo by District leaders of the Association at separate meetings in the respective Districts.

In the Talensi District, for instance, Madam Sedonia Adabugah, the District Chairperson, in the company of her executives, presented the cheques to members and said the gestures were members’ contributions to the Association’s Health Fund, initiated by leadership to support sick members to settle part of their medical bills.

She wished her members a speedy recovery and thanked the management of the District Hospital for the “enormous support” offered to them.
Madam Catherine Anyoka, the Deputy Director of Nursing Services (DDNS) at the Regional Hospital, applauded the GRNMA for the gesture when the facility’s staff received her share of the money and emphasized the need for nurses to remain united under the GRNMA.

Mr Lawal Alhassan, the Kassena-Nankana West District Director of the Ghana Health Service, also lauded the Association’s “timely interventions” to its members in the District and affirmed his belief in the GRNMA’s dedication to members’ welfare.

Mr Abase said, “I am grateful that in my time of need, GRNMA has stood by me. This assistance will significantly relieve my financial pressure, and I am deeply thankful to the leadership for their unwavering support.”

Speaking to the Ghana News Agency (GNA) on the support, Mr Desmond Yaani, the Regional Public Relations Officer (PRO) of the GRNMA, noted that members in the Region and across the country received support over the years from the Association’s Health Fund, under the leadership of Mrs Ofori-Ampofo.

Even though Mr Yaani described the fund as a “fantastic initiative” that deserved members’ support, he noted that it was essential for members to explore the underlying causes of their illness and actively work to reduce such conditions.

Mr Yaani further advocated the need for health facilities to organise regular health screening exercises for nurses and midwives, with particular focus on their mental well-being.

The PRO, an Ophthalmic Nurse at the Fumbisi Hospital in the Builsa South District, insisted that GRNMA members must prioritise their health, as the environment and conditions these professionals work in could foster various challenges.
