In 2014 Ghana was hit by a cholera outbreak. A number of precious lives were lost as a result of that. The situation was largely blamed on improper disposal of waste in the country.

To avert the recur of this appalling situation, the Savelugu-Nanton Municipal Assembly in collaboration with its stakeholders have adopted a strategy to deal with sanitation problems in the area.

As a first step towards this newly adopted strategy, residents over the weekend, came out in their numbers to join the Municipal Chief Executive Hajia Aishetu Seidu and the Member of Parliament Mohammed Abdul Somed Gunu to embark on a cleanup exercise.

Addressing the people after the exercise, Hajia Aishetu commended the people for coming out in their numbers to take part in the exercise.

She urged the people to clean their surroundings regularly in order to avoid contracting sanitation-related diseases.

She also assured residents that her outfit would collaborate with various schools to set up sanitation clubs to deal with sanitation issues in the public basic and senior high schools.

The Member of Parliament for Savelugu Constituency Mohammed Abdul Somed Gunu said sanitation marshals would soon be set up to deal with those who engage in indiscriminate disposal refuse.

He thus urged the people to practice good sanitation to prevent them from falling foul of the law.

The Savelugu-Nanton Municipal Environmental Health Officer, Duut Kombian, noted that sanitation was a shared responsibility and called on the people to change their attitude.

He added that his outfit would fully liaise with the District Assembly to tackle sanitation in every public place in the municipality.

He emphasized that regular clean-up exercises would be a mirage if the people did not embrace it and change their attitude towards waste management.
