Minister for Communications, Sam Nartey George, has boldly condemned the SIM card registration exercise under the previous NPP government, calling it a “sham” that deceived the public and wasted taxpayers’ money.

Speaking on Joy News’ PM Express, the Ningo-Prampram MP revealed that he has submitted evidence to the Attorney General and is continuing to build and forward additional materials for investigation.

He clarified that the current exercise is not a re-registration but the actual registration process, suggesting the previous administration failed to conduct a legitimate registration in the first place.

“There was a sham. There was a hoax. There was a hoodwinking of Ghanaians, an unfortunate episode in the history of our country,” he said.

Sam George accused the former leadership of violating data protection and national security protocols, asserting that Ghanaians were misled into believing a proper process was underway, when in reality, “no registration was happening.”

He lamented the financial cost of the failed exercise, citing over ¢25 million likely spent by mobile network operators alone, in addition to public funds. “It was irresponsible public governance, to put it lightly,” he said.

When questioned about accountability, he stressed that legal action is underway: “The Attorney General is responsible for holding everyone who holds public office accountable.” He confirmed that documents have already been sent to the Attorney General’s office, with more to follow as investigations continue.

Motivated by a strong sense of duty, the minister said his efforts aim to uphold justice and protect the nation’s integrity. “I sit in this chair today mindful of the fact that tomorrow I won’t be here, and my actions and inactions will be held accountable.”

He sharply questioned the commitment of those who led the previous campaign, challenging their understanding of patriotism and public duty. “Do these people love this country to start with?” he asked. “Do they understand the weight of responsibility that sits on your shoulder when you hold the high office of Minister of State?”

Concluding his remarks, Sam George condemned the prior administration for misleading the public for two years, mishandling citizens’ biometric data, and disregarding critical laws. “People must have a certain modicum of respect for Ghanaians,” he stated.
