The Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Attoman Group of Companies, Mr. George Atto Annan, has disclosed that the Electoral Commission’s decision to limit the registration exercise at the EC’s district offices would disenfranchise many potential voters.
In an interview on Accra FM, Mr. Annan indicated that the EC ought to pull the brakes on its decision to allow potential voters to get registered at the EC district offices.
In his opinion, registering potential voters at the EC’s district offices would provide fertile grounds to disenfranchise many Ghanaians who turn 18 years of age or older and are thus readily ready to exercise their voting rights.
“I use this opportunity to remind the EC that under Article 42 of the 1992 Constitution, every Ghanaian of 18 years and above and of sound mind is entitled to register as a voter for the purposes of elections. This right to register and exercise one’s franchise is an inalienable right that one should not be denied to citizens who qualify to exercise same.”
He added that Ghanaians will not sit unconcerned for the Jean Mensah-led EC and President Akufo-Addo to undermine the will of the citizenry going into the 2024 general elections.
Mr. Annan reiterated that the EC’s decision to restrict limited voter registration to its 268 district offices is not only unlawful but an affront to the fundamental human rights and liberty guaranteed under the 1992 Constitution.
