A recent post-election poll conducted by Global Info Analytics has shed light on the factors contributing to the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) defeat in the 2024 elections. The poll’s findings, which were based on responses from a representative sample of voters, revealed that a staggering 68% of respondents held former President Akufo-Addo responsible for the party’s loss.

According to the report, the respondents also attributed the party’s defeat to other key government officials, including former Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta, who was blamed by 40% of respondents, and Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, the NPP’s presidential candidate, who was held responsible by 37% of respondents. Furthermore, 33% of respondents blamed Dr. Matthew Opoku-Prempeh, while 32% held other government appointees responsible.

The poll’s findings also highlighted the role of Members of Parliament in the party’s defeat, with 25% of respondents holding them accountable. In contrast, only 9% of respondents blamed Kennedy Agyapong, who contested in the NPP’s primaries but did not lead the party into the elections.

The poll’s results suggest that the Akufo-Addo government’s administration was a significant contributing factor to the NPP’s loss. The findings also underscore the complexities of voter sentiment and the challenges facing the NPP as it seeks to rebuild after its electoral defeat.

In addition, the poll provided insight into the factors that influenced voter decisions, particularly in the final weeks and days of the campaign. According to the poll, Dr. Bawumia lost ground to President John Mahama during this period, with only 83% of voters who had intended to vote for Dr. Bawumia actually casting their ballots for him on election day. Meanwhile, nearly 14% of respondents switched their votes to Mahama on election day, while 3% broke away to support other candidates.
