In a significant breakthrough in the fight against illegal mining operations in Ghana, the Western Regional Police Command has raided an illegal mining enclave in Avelebo and Akango, located in the Evalue Ajomoro-Gwira District of the Western Region.

The raid, which resulted in the seizure of 10 excavators and the arrest of 15 individuals, including seven Chinese and eight Ghanaian miners, marks a major step forward in the government’s efforts to combat galamsey.

The illegal miners had taken over the Evalue Jomoro enclave, mining illegally and polluting the Ankobra River.

The Ankobra River, a vital water source for local communities, has been severely impacted by the activities of galamsey operators.

The pollution of the river has not only harmed the environment but also posed serious health risks to those who depend on it for drinking and fishing.

The raid is the latest in a series of efforts to crack down on galamsey operations in the region.

In recent months, the Forestry Commission’s Rapid Response team has also conducted raids on galamsey camps in the Subri Forest Reserve, arresting four armed miners and seizing equipment.

The authorities have stated that the excavators and other seized equipment will be used as evidence to prosecute those arrested.
