The Alliance for Social Equity and Public Accountability (ASEPA) has indicated that it has received the passage of the Special Prosecutor Bill with mixed feelings.
According to the group, there are several Bills in Parliament that would augment the fight against corruption to a very large extent if passed.
The Executive Secretary of ASEPA, Mensah Thompson in a press statement, noted that passing of the Right to Information Bill will rather help promote transparency, fairness, integrity, and efficiency in the discharge of the duties of the Special Prosecutor.
He explained that access to information, management of information and relevant data is a major challenge in the country, and “laws such as the Whistle-Blowers Act would be given some life when passed by Bill.
ASEPA explained that “the Special Prosecutor Act is only a vehicle that can be used to fight corruption. Signing the Bill itself does not represent enough will to fight corruption”
The group said the fight against corruption will be achieved from how the office of the Special Prosecutor is set up, how the Special Prosecutor is appointed and the personality that occupies the position.
They are therefore calling on Parliament to consider some relevant recommendations brought before it by ASEPA and the Right To Information Coalition as well as make critical amendments to the current RTI Bill to enable the law serves its purpose to the fullest.
