Parliament has approved a budget of GH₵65,899,456 for the Ministry of Sports and Recreation for the 2025 fiscal year.

This funding is aimed at supporting various activities within the Ministry, which is responsible for promoting sports development and managing sporting events across the country.

However, concerns have arisen over the absence of dedicated funds for maintaining the nation’s sports infrastructure.

One of the Ministry’s key plans is to renovate the Accra Sports Stadium after Ghana’s 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifier against Chad.

While this renovation project is welcomed, some lawmakers argue that this is a short-term fix and that a more sustainable, long-term strategy is necessary for the upkeep of the country’s sporting facilities.

These lawmakers emphasize the importance of establishing a structured funding mechanism specifically aimed at the continuous maintenance of sports infrastructure, rather than relying on periodic or ad-hoc interventions.

Several members of Parliament have suggested that a consistent allocation of resources be made annually to ensure that facilities are not left to fall into disrepair.

They argue that proper funding and long-term planning are essential to preserving the country’s sports infrastructure and ensuring that it remains suitable for international competitions and local events alike.

Despite the approval of the 2025 budget, the ongoing discussions surrounding infrastructure maintenance have raised questions about the government’s commitment to the long-term development of sports in Ghana.

Many believe that without a clear, dedicated funding strategy, the country’s sporting facilities may continue to deteriorate, ultimately hindering the growth of sports in the nation.
