A group of unemployed graduate nurses and midwives from the Ashanti Regional capital, Kumasi, alleged that state officials are demanding money from them before they can be posted. This was revealed during a protest organized by the unemployed nurses on Monday.

The group comprising of graduates from the 2020, 2021, and 2022 batches, from various Nursing Training Colleges and public universities took to the streets on April 8, to demand postings from the government. They said the government has delayed in granting financial clearance for their permanent job placements.

Haruna Ibrahim, President of the Graduate Unemployed Nurses and Midwives Association, stated that they believe some individuals are receiving bribes in exchange for financial clearance and postings. According to him, some of their colleagues have been cleared and posted despite the Ministry of Health and the Ministry of Finance claims that they are discussing their clearance.

At the Ministry of Health and Ministry of Finance, “we think that there are people who are giving financial clearance and postings to some of our colleagues who can afford between GH¢5,000 and GH¢10,000 Immediately they pay, they get posted,” he said.
