Speaking at the event, the chairman of the occasion, Nana Opraw Akuamoah VIII, the Nifahene of the Buem Traditional Area stated that their predecessors have since 1954 petitioned various governments, the UN and other relevant organizations and bodies for the creation of another region within the boundaries of the present Volta Region, spanning the area stretching from the boundaries beyond Hohoe to KRACHI formerly Buem – Krachi District.
He pointed out that their quest for a new Region [Oti Region] has not been a smooth journey.
“Various obstacles have been surmounted and thankfully the present government has heeded to out plea culminating in the setting up of a commission of inquiry to verify the viability or otherwise of this proposal for the creation of a new region” – He said.
He stressed that the proposed Oti Region, as has been said over and over again, will enhance and speed up the socio-economic development of their area which for some time inexplicable reason has suffered total neglect in every segment as against other parts of the Volta Region.
“We believe that the time has come for us to take our destinies into our own hands” He added.
In an interview with Christiana Ativi, Nana Krachiwura said although the sudden death of the late Dr. Kwaku Addae who was the Secretary and Spokesperson of JCC has been a big blow to them, that however, will never distrust the agenda of the creating of the new region. He advice each and every one to vote yes since that’s the only way their mission can be achieved.
The Tornu Youth for Development (TYDEV) extended their solidarity and support to the movement for the creation of Oti Region out of the Volta Region and also encourage the government to muster the courage and marshall all the resources necessary for the realizations of a long held dream of a deprived people since their independence from colonial rule.
The President of TYDEV, Mr Destiny Prince Kudadjie Tetteh said they are urging all the people leaving in the Oti enclave and like minded Ghanaian to ignore all emotional outburst, vain threat(s) and traces of colonial mentality from a section of southern Voltarians who are kicking against this lofty idea and historical necessity.
He noted that the Tornu Youth for Development considers the opposition and agitations from people who are not affected by the daily suffering and hardship face by the people of the Oti enclave as unfortunate, unsympathetic, unreasonable and neo-colonial mentality which cannot stand the reality of our time.
