The Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP) has uncovered a GH₵280 million corruption scandal at the National Petroleum Authority (NPA), implicating several high-ranking officials in a network of bribery and abuse of power.

At a press conference on June 2, 2025, Special Prosecutor Kissi Agyebeng revealed that investigations launched in November 2024 unearthed systematic extortion of oil marketing companies (OMCs) by NPA officials between 2022 and 2024.

“These officials used threats, intimidation, and regulatory pressure to coerce money from stakeholders in the petroleum sector,” Agyebeng stated. The OSP traced GH₵280.5 million in illicit gains, some of which funded luxury properties in Ghana and abroad, as well as 22 fuel trucks.

According to the OSP, some officials funneled the illegal proceeds into setting up their OMCs, placing them in unethical competition with regulated firms.

Criminal charges will be filed against implicated NPA staff and OMC executives by the end of June 2025. The OSP has vowed to release full details, including names and assets recovered, once the charges are officially filed.

Agyebeng emphasized that the office remains committed to rooting out corruption and called on the public to remain alert and supportive of ongoing legal proceedings.
