The Executive Director of Local Governance and Public Accountability Network, Hon. Gilbert Korbla Keklie has charged the Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies to organize capacity building workshops for unit committees, zonal and urban councils members in order to boost their Internally Generated Funds (IGFs).
Hon. Keklie bemoaned bitterly how the MMDAs have neglected unit committees in the local governance system in Ghana, a situation which he said is killing most of the assemblies.
Social Workers who also doubled as Assembly Members for Anlo Afiadenyigba Dziehe – Ablame told the host of governance programs at a popular local radio station, Fafa FM at Dzodze in the Volta Region that the unit committees members were constitutionally elected together with the assembly members in September 2015 but “the assemblies have refused building capacity to help them work effectively”
Hon. Kekeli revealed that the assemblies do not have any budget allocations to support even meetings of the unit committees while they are required by law to meet every month and report to the area/zonal/urban councils on the developments in their areas.
According to him, this situation gives room for the MMDCEs and other officers of the assemblies to propose their own projects for and on behalf of the unit committees.
“Do you know that some assemblies and unit committee members may not even be aware of some assembly funded projects are in their areas?” He quizzed.
He again challenged all the newly confirmed MMDCEs to consider the importance of unit committees to generate more revenues to supplement the District Assembly Common Fund (DACF) since its release is not consistent to meet all the needs of the people.
